Harry Kane is uncertain for England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures after picking up a leg injury during Bayern Munich’s latest Bundesliga match. The injury comes just before he was due to join England for their matches against Greece and Finland. The exact nature of Kane’s injury hasn’t been revealed, and his availability remains in doubt.
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany commented, “It’s still too early to say what Kane has. We hope it’s nothing serious,” while also mentioning concerns about Dayot Upamecano. Kane has now suffered knocks in consecutive weekends, first in Bayern’s 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on September 28. Though he played in Bayern’s midweek Champions League loss to Aston Villa, Bayern might still be hesitant to release him for international duty even if he recovers in time.
Kane, England and Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, was criticized by the German media after the Champions League match, with one outlet calling him “invisible” during the game. Former Arsenal star Martin Keown, however, came to Kane’s defense on talkSPORT: “The German media are having an absolute laugh criticizing him. What he’s done for Bayern since he’s been there has been magnificent. He almost got them back into the game against Villa, but Emi Martinez made a great save.”
Keown continued, “If he were German, he’d be praised endlessly. It’s out of order. He’s scored 54 goals in 54 games, that’s not someone who’s not performing.”
Although Kane didn’t score in Bayern’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, he assisted Michael Olise, who netted in the 54th minute to give Bayern a 3-2 lead. However, a late equalizer from Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush in stoppage time meant the match ended 3-3. Despite the draw, Bayern remains top of the Bundesliga, level on points with RB Leipzig.
England will take on Greece at Wembley on Thursday night before traveling to Finland for their second Nations League clash on Sunday, October 13, with both matches broadcast live on talkSPORT.
