Barcelona midfielder and third captain Frenkie de Jong is finally closing on a comeback from his injury-enforced absence that has lasted more than five months.
The 27-year-old had been sidelined with an ankle injury since April but has resumed training earlier this month and a call on his comeback date will be made on Monday.
While De Jong’s imminent return is a major boost, his contract situation and future continue to remain a controversial topic at Barça.
Either renew or leave
Now, according to journalist Miguel Rico (h/t Carpetas FCB), Barcelona have been trying to renew De Jong’s contract for months now and will put him on the transfer list if there is no progress on the new deal.
De Jong’s contract with Barça expires in 2026, meaning he will be entering the final year of his deal in the summer of 2025.
